Couleur Cafe, Denmark
Couleur Café DK is the largest annual African 1-day event in Denmark with festival, music, art and a large market.
The Danish Couleur Café is a free African Music Streetfestival. It takes place each year in the beginning of June.
Next edition will be at Union (Nørre Allé) and Skt. Hans Torv, followed by a great afterparty.
Running for more than 20 years, Couleur Café has established itself as the primary unifying African festival in Denmark. In 2017, we won the Celebrate Africa Award for “this year’s entertainment” and in 2018 we were among the nominees for the Danish award “Fællesskabsprisen”.
We have a large regular, but also demanding audience that grows for each year. This includes families with children, young people who loves dancing and enjoys music, as well as ‘African
afficionados’. Our audience knows they will be presented to good music from Africa, cool bands and energetic dance groups. It is also a good day for dressing up in your finest traditional or
modern African attire and you will many options to make a good bargain on our colorful market with more than 65 stalls. The market consists of NGO’s, small businesses, shops and private sellers – all with a direct connection to Africa. 10 streetfood venders representing different African cousine is adding the final touch to a great day out.
The festival originally started as a drum gathering in Fælledparken and has since grown and changed its form and style. A main idea for the mood of the festival is a combination of Danish ‘hygge’ with African togetherness. We see it as a very succesfull cultural meeting between ‘Afro-Danes’ and other Danish with an openminded attitude. The idea is to widen the knowledge and appreciation for African culture in general. The audience are invited to be inspired and to a fresh view on opportunities and ideas from the continent. All are welcome and the festival is free.
Couleur Café also attracts many families with children and we make sure to have special activities and workshop for children.
We do our best to develop and surprise every year! Last year we introduced the African fashion show and in 2019 we have managed to expand our area and to close part of the road, leaving more space for stages and the market.
The event takes place around the culture house ‘Union’ at Nørre Allé 7. The staff at Union is deeply involved in planning the event together with our own group.
The official programme is running from 12 to 20 followed by an Afterparty for a limited number of ticket holders.
Apart from this brief introduction, all our material is currently only in Danish.
